It soon will take fewer quarters to feed city parking meters!
The Reading Parking Authority voted Wednesday to cut the cost of an hour’s parking to $1, instead of the current $1.50.
Essentially, that means motorists will get 15 minutes per quarter rather than 10.
“We have to give back to the community,” Rei Encarnacion, interim executive director, told the parking board. “Businesses are upset.”
He said the change would be implemented block by block over the next two months.
The city likely would lose $200,000 in meter income, he said, but not in ticket revenue since the same motorists likely would continue to overstay their time.
Parking rates in the city garages are not affected.
